Photo A Lesson 3 begins by adding protective boots to Fritz's legs. This should have been done from the start but today is his first and he readily accepts them.
Photo B As we review last week's lesson, it is as if Fritz has been practicing. He begins better this time than we finished last time. This is the sign of a good understanding of the last session.
Photo C Now I teach Fritz to come. By standing in front and driving his hip forward, I can teach him the cue to approach me on command.
Photo D Finally, after many tries, he succeeds. This calls for hugs and praises as I let him rest.
Photo E To further teach Fritz emotional control, I use props such as my lariat, a sheet, or a whip and a plastic bag. By presenting the object, then retreating when he keeps his feet still, I can teach Fritz to turn and face what scares him instead of running away. This one lesson has saved me from getting hurt many times.
Photo F The last session today is the bridle. We review the give and moving the hip. Then I add the "go forward" cue and begin to teach the give at a walk.
Photo G In the end, Fritz stands quietly, without restraint as I remove his boots and say good-night.
